And I Loved a Soldier by David-Matthew Barnes

One of David-Matthew's earliest essays is the bittersweet And I Loved a Soldier, featured in the 2003 collection Rite of Passage: Tales of Backpacking 'Round Europe, published by Lonely Planet.

About the essay, David-Matthew says, "When I was 19, I bought a backpack, flew to Europe, and spent the next year living and loving in 7 countries, primarily Greece. Later, I wrote about my experiences in 'And I Loved a Soldier.' Editor Lisa Johnson published it in the wonderful collection. To this day, I still hear from fellow travelers about the essay."
